Volleyball Rolls Past The Citadel In Three Sets At ECU Classic
September 09, 2017 | Volleyball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The ECU volleyball team rebounded from a tough loss last night, responding with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-5) victory over The Citadel Saturday afternoon inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
Â
Freshman right side Bri Wood turned in a stellar offensive performance, notching 11 kills on 19 attempts with just one error for a .526 hitting percentage. Senior outside hitters Lael Ceriani and Ashton Mares tacked on nine kills apiece with Ceriani ending up hitting .467. Defensively, sophomore libero Brandee Markwith collected a team-high 10 kills and sophomore middle hitter Toya Osuegbu racked up six blocks. Mellanie King paced the Bulldogs with seven kills, but committed eight attacking errors to finish with a -.033 hitting mark.
Â
ECU had full control of things on the stat sheet, tallying more kills (42-22), digs (42-34) and total blocks (8.0-2.0). The teams combined for 13 aces.
Â
Team Records: ECU (6-3) | The Citadel (2-8)
Â
Torbett's Take: "Today was a nice response after a subpar performance in last night's match. Bri continues to grow really nicely as a hitter and Lael turned in a good effort as well. We talked about avoiding a third set slump during the intermission and the team answered the bell."
Â
Set One: The Pirates took the upper hand quickly to begin the match, scoring eight of the first 10 points. The lead reached 10 at 14-4 after a bad Citadel set and ECU would reach set point with a 24-12 advantage before winning the frame by six.
Â
Set Two: The Bulldogs jumped out to a 5-2 cushion in the second stanza, but the Pirates quickly tied things at seven following a kill by senior middle hitter Natalie Montini. ECU was able to break a 12-12 deadlock later in the set with a kill by Wood and would not relinquish the lead. The Citadel was able to keep it close for a while, but the Pirates pulled away in the end and took a 2-0 match advantage into the intermission.
Â
Set Three: Hoping to avoid a slow start to the third frame, ECU was successful in that endeavor. Holding a 3-1 lead, the Pirates scored 10 points in a row to take a stranglehold on the set. The Purple and Gold kept the gas pedal down, only allowing five points to the visitors on the way to clinching the sweep.
