GREENVILLE, N.C. – Following a successful showing at the Keydet Invitational last weekend, the ECU track and field program is back in Virginia to participate in the Liberty Kickoff. The two-day event runs from Jan. 26-27 at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex and admission is free for all spectators.
Â
The meet, which will feature approximately 1,200 athletes from 40 colleges and universities, is set to begin Friday at 12:30 p.m. with the pentathlon 60-meter hurdles. Saturday's events will commence with the men's weight throw at 9 a.m.
Â
"We are extremely excited to get back at it again this weekend," Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "After the momentum that we created last week, it will be great to see if this can continue into the weekend."
Â
In the first release of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association regional rankings for indoor track, both the men's and women's teams are slotted 13th in the Southeast Region.
Â
At the Keydet Invitational, the women's team won the meet by 31.5 points over in-state foe and second-place NC State. Senior Galissia Cause set a school record in the indoor shot put for the second-straight weekend, recording a toss of 16.01 meters to top her previous mark of 15.68. She was one of six event winners for the Pirates in the meet. Classmate Mohogany Baker captured the weight throw with a mark of 19.01 meters while senior Ryan Davis was second in the weight throw with a heave of 18.62 meters.

The women's 4x400 relay squad of freshman Brooke Stith, freshman Jada Terrell, Warner and senior Naomi Whitaker captured first place in a time of 3:48.53, edging Charlotte's team who finished in 3:48.59.
Â
Currently, ECU has athletes in the top three of the American Athletic Conference performance list in eight events.
Â
"It is very important that we start to make some moves on the AAC list in certain events after two meets into the season," Kraft added. "I have always preached to our teams that we have to be both mentally and physically prepared to succeed in this conference. We will be competing in another great facility this weekend at Liberty University."
