GAMEDAY: ECU Embarks On First Road Trip

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The ECU lacrosse teams embarks on its first road trip this weekend after hosting George Washington in its inaugural game Saturday. The Pirates will start the weekend at Winthrop on Friday, Feb. 16, at 4 p.m. Two days later, ECU will take on Gardner-Webb at noon on Sunday, Feb. 18.

"We're excited about the matchup and the challenge and we're looking forward to the opportunity to improve upon some of the little things we saw this past weekend," ECU Head Coach Amanda Barnes said. "We're looking forward to getting on the road. This will be first time our team will have stayed on the road overnight. There is a lot of excitement that goes along with that."

The Pirates dropped their inaugural game at George Washington, 18-7, on a rainy and windy afternoon at Johnson Stadium. Freshman Casey Sullivan scored the first goal in program history on a free possession shot 3:26 into the contest. She scored three of the Pirates' seven goals with fellow freshmen Nicole LeGar and Ally Stanton adding two goals each.

Winthrop, under second-year head coach Julika Blakenship, is coming off a 9-10 season in 2017. The Eagles are led by a trio of preseason All-Big South Conference players: Nicole Beatson, Katherine Judge and Alaina Girani. Beatson and Judge were both first-team all-conference players a year ago with Beatson leading the conference in goals scored (57) and Judge posting league-best 92 draw controls. Girani was voted the Big South Defensive Player-of-the-Year as a sophomore in 2016.

Gardner-Webb returns a pair of All-Big South performers in Abby Hanscom and Amanda Steinmuller. Hanscom started 15 games last season and finished with 16 goals and four assists, while Steinmuller was the catalyst all season for the Bulldogs' offense, scoring 59 points (38 goals, 21 assists) in 17 starts.

The Bulldogs, which are in their fourth year as a program, opened their season with a 21-11 win over Wofford this past Saturday.
