GREENVILLE, N.C. - ECU's spring schedule progressed through another pair of phases Friday as the Pirates wore pads for the first time and completed another installation session during a 90-minute workout at High Field inside the Cliff Moore Practice Complex.
Head coach Scottie Montgomery and his staff directed ECU's initial contact outing in shells (shoulder pads) after opening drills in shorts and helmets on Monday and Wednesday. The practice was the first of 12 which will be conducted in pads, including a scheduled scrimmage on March 17 and the Purple-Gold Game on March 24.
"Extremely physical is the description I would use," Montgomery said, when referring to the Pirates' first day in pads. "Defensively, the pressure we were able to create around the edges really caused problems in our run game and the energy coming out of our linebackers was clear."
The Pirates also followed Monday's first full install day with their second instruction-oriented session, which continued to introduce new terminology, alignments and play calls for both the offense and defense.
"I thought our second install went well," Montgomery added. "Our quarterbacks understood the concepts, but at the same time, it would be fair to say that it could have been a little better up front and with our receivers."
Unlike previous springs which primarily featured one extended team-on-team period at the end of practice, Montgomery has opted the utilize 26 minutes of scrimmage-like action in three different segments separated by individual and positional drills. Similar to Wednesday's workout, ECU continued emphasis on all facets of its run and pass packages, along with situational first-and-10 snaps.
The Pirates return to action early Saturday afternoon before beginning their second week of work Monday.
NOTES: While quarterbacks Reid Herring, Kingsley Ifedi and Holton Ahlers were all extensively involved during the three team periods and pass skeleton work, Herring's snap numbers were slightly elevated (in comparison) for the No. 1 unit ... Herring completed 7-of-13 passes for 85 yards, which included a long of 24 to Terrell Green, while Ifedi was 1-of-4 and Ahlers 0-of-2 during the three team periods ... Junior Hussein Howe ripped off the longest run of the afternoon with a 24-yard ramble ... Defensively, Ray Tillman recorded four stops and recovered a fumble, while Raequan Purvis and Michael Swift turned up the heat with two sacks each ... On special teams, Corey Seargent blocked a field goal attempt, while Trevon Brown served as ECU's prime punt returner ... From an injury standpoint, OL James DeMatto, DB Jaren Rainey and LB Xavier Smith will all miss the remainder of spring drills.
