Volleyball Adds Moneshia Simmons To Coaching Staff

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Moneshia Simmons has been named an assistant coach for the ECU volleyball program according to an announcement Wednesday by head coach Julie Torbett.

Simmons arrives in Greenville with experience at all levels of the game after playing professionally in Sweden and turning in a decorated collegiate career at Clemson University.

"I am proud to join the coaching staff at East Carolina University," Simmons said. "I look forward to utilizing my skills, knowledge and techniques to help the program continue to grow. It's hard to contain my enthusiasm about the opportunity to join the staff of the winningest coach in ECU's history! It will be a joy learning the ropes of coaching at the college level from Coach Torbett and assisting with the day to day operations of the program."

During the 2015-16 Swedish League season, Simmons was named the top outside hitter as well as the second-best hitter in the circuit. As a result, she was selected to the Swedish League All-Star Team. Simmons gained additional international experience in 2011 when she was a member of the USA Women's Junior National Team that placed fourth at the FIVB Women's Junior World Championship in Peru.

As a student-athlete at Clemson (2010-13), Simmons earned AVCA All-East Region and First-Team All-ACC honors as a senior and graduated as one of just seventh players in school history to eclipse 1,000 career kills and digs. She is 8th on the school career list in attempts (3,891), 12th in kills (1,376) and 15th in digs (1,086) and put up 338 total blocks and 66 aces as well. In her final year, she achieved one of the most prolific offensive seasons in school history, finishing with an ACC-leading 549 kills, a 4.46 kills/set average, and 599.5 points scored. She also set an ACC record with 24 kills in a 3-set win against Notre Dame.

ECU produced a 22-11 overall record in 2017, marking the first 20-win season for the program since 2005 as well as the second-most victories in a single season. The Pirates also turned in a 13-7 mark in American Athletic Conference play – finishing fourth in the league standings after being selected last in the conference's preseason coaches poll. ECU returns a solid core of four starters in 2018, including AAC Freshman of the Year and setter Shelby Martin.
