Purple-Gold Game Rosters
GREENVILLE, N.C. - ECU wrapped up the Cliff Moore Practice Complex portion of its spring schedule in cool and breezy conditions Friday, working for 60 minutes under partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the mid-50s.
While the shorts and helmets session completed the Pirates' weekday workout slate, it also served as a final tune-up for the program's annual spring game scheduled for Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. Included on the last practice agenda was a heavy dose of special teams work and the first opportunity for recently-drafted Purple and Gold squads to formulate and review their respective game plan with a thorough walk-through.
"I'm looking forward to seeing quality competition, and coaches are certainly included in that," head coach Scottie Montgomery said. "Offensively, the accuracy of our quarterbacks needs to keep progressing the way it has all spring and our decision-making has to be top-level. On defense, creating pressure and tackling in the open field remains a critical priority."
Montgomery announced that Holton Ahlers and Kingsley Ifedi will quarterback the Purple squad, while Reid Herring will engineer the Gold offense. Live hitting will be permitted in most all positions, except during punt returns where the ball will be spotted at the location of the catch or where it rolls dead. Lastly, the Pirates will attempt all extra-point and field goal tries, and in lieu of kickoffs, the ball will be spotted at the 25-yard line.
A full officiating crew from the American Athletic Conference has been assigned to the contest, which will consist of four 10-minute quarters (standard clock for the first two periods).
Two former Pirate defensive standouts, Jim Bolding and Daren Hart, will serve as honorary captains during Saturday's tilt. Bolding was a two-time All-America selection who led the nation with 10 interceptions in 1975, while Hart was a 1993 Freshman All-America honoree.
NOTES: Friday's gathering represented the last official position coach-supervised team practice until the Pirates conduct their first workout of fall camp, which is tentatively scheduled for Friday, Aug. 3 ... A total of seven players will be recognized at halftime for their efforts during spring drills - offensive, defensive and special teams MVPs, offensive and defensive most improved players and top newcomers from each side of the ball ... Saturday's AAC referee will be Anthony Calabrese, who also served in the same capacity during ECU league games against Tulane and UCF last season ... Fans who want to get their first glimpse of the 2018 Pirates can so at 11 a.m. during the fan meet & greet or at noon when players begin their pre-practice walk-through on Bagwell Field ... The entire squad will be on the playing surface beginning at 12:15 p.m. for its traditional stretch routine.
