Allen And Pettersson Named ECU's Most Outstanding Scholar-Athletes

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- Austin Allen, a member of the men's tennis team, and Lisa Pettersson, a senior on the women's golf squad, have been named ECU's Most Outstanding Male and Female Scholar-Athletes for 2017-18. The duo will be honored at the 29th Annual Breakfast of Champions Saturday, April 28, at the Murphy Center.

The award, sponsored by Nutrien, is considered to be the most prestigious honor that is presented annually to a male and female student-athlete. It recognizes academic achievement at ECU, qualities of leadership and service to the university and community.

A redshirt sophomore from Asheboro, Allen posted a 12-3 singles record this season while serving as President of the ECU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and Vice Chairman/Coordinator of Community Engagement for the American Athletic Conference SAAC and maintaining a 4.0 GPA as a biochemistry major.

Allen was the recipient of both the Chemistry Undergraduate Research Experience Award and the Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Award.

Allen enrolled at ECU as a member of the Honors College in 2015 and made the Chancellor's List each of his first five semesters. He was the first student-athlete to be inducted into the ECU Servire Society, earned by contributing more than 100 hours of community service during a calendar year. He has contributed over 245 volunteer hours to date serving a variety of organizations.

A native of Sweden, Pettersson is a four-year letterwinner and two-time member of The American All-Conference team. She participated in the NCAA Women's Golf Championships each of the previous two seasons and will compete in her third consecutive championship next month. Pettersson owns the second-lowest career scoring average in school history and is one of only two Pirates to ever shoot 65 in a single round.

A five-time member of the Chancellor's List and two-time American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team performer, Pettersson will graduate with a degree in quantitative economics. She earned Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) Division I Scholar All-America honors each of the previous three seasons.

Pettersson has volunteered with community partners such as Aces for Autism, The Boys & Girls Club of the Coastal Plains and the Wounded Warriors Project among others.

Megan Williams, a senior on the volleyball team, is the recipient of the Walter and Marie Williams Spirit of the East Posteligibility Scholarship, which is given to a student-athlete who demonstrates outstanding commitment to the 'spirit' of East Carolina University. Williams, who began her ECU career as a walk-on, is graduating cum laude with a bachelor's degree in public health.

Kathryn Carson, a member of the ECU women's golf team, was selected as the recipient of the Kristi Overton Female Scholar-Athlete Award, which recognizes an outstanding female student-athlete from North Carolina that has excelled as a freshman. A native of Morrisville, she recorded six top-20 finishes and placed in the top-22 in nine of 11 events during her freshman season, while posting a 74.22 season stroke average and compiling a 3.62 GPA as an exercise physiology major.

The Pat Draughon Postgraduate Scholarship was awarded to graduate defensive back Austin Teague. An Honor Roll and Dean's List performer in the classroom with a cumulative grade point average of 3.73, Teague graduated from ECU in May 2017 with a degree in management. He currently holds a 3.74 GPA as a graduate student in ECU's MBA program. He experienced action in all 12 contests as a senior team captain and logged a personal-best 22 stops.

Maria Gomez was selected as the recipient of the Dr. David A. Dosser Pirate Service and Leadership Postgraduate Scholarship Award. A senior on the women's tennis squad, Gomez has been a member of the Dean's Student Leadership Council serving as a representative for the Department of Economics. She was a member of the team that received the 2017 ITA Women's Tennis Community Service Award and completed more than 160 volunteer hours during her four years at ECU.

The 2017-18 Nutrien All-Academic Team, which includes Allen, Petterson and Williams, will also be recognized Saturday. In addition to the aforementioned trio, the 18-member squad includes: Kelly Barnhill (men's swimming), Clay Brown (men's golf), Abbey Flynn (lacrosse), Tia Jackson (women's track and field), Jordan Martin (men's track and field), Stefano Migliorati (men's cross country), Dalton Montgomery (football), Vendela Norrman (women's swimming), Justice Obasohan (men's basketball), Thais Oliveira (women's basketball), Rachel Renfrow (soccer), Cayla Rodney (women's cross country), Ryan Ross (baseball), Sarah Sarjoo (women's tennis) and Ashley Weingartz (softball).
