GREENVILLE, N.C. - Filling personnel vacancies at the wide receiver and defensive secondary positions, and continuing the depth-building process on the line of scrimmage were all objectives reached by sixth-year East Carolina Head Football Coach Ruffin McNeill and staff as the Pirates announced a balanced 18-member 2015 signing class.

In addition to the 13 student-athletes who officially signed their national letters-of-intent with the ECU football program, McNeill also welcomed inside linebacker Tony Baird, defensive backs Nhyre Quinerly and Corey Seargent, running back Derrell Scott and defensive lineman Kyron Speller to the squad as early enrollees. Seargent and Speller both initially signed national letters-of-intent with East Carolina a year ago, but were not enrolled last fall.

Of the 18, nine are projected to play offense while the other nine will line up on defense. Offensively, the Pirates signed three linemen, three receivers, two running backs and one quarterback. On defense, ECU is looking forward to adding three secondary performers, three linebackers and three linemen on its roster to begin its second campaign in the American Athletic Conference this fall.

"We feel this is a really good class with big play ability, line depth and strong local ties," McNeill said. "We've built this program brick-by-brick and believe that every one of these young men has the ability to make an impact, both on and off the field. Any time you can put people in a positive and powerful environment, they will have the opportunity to succeed at the highest level."

Thirteen of the newcomers will open workouts in the spring or summer with four years of eligibility remaining, while Scott will have three left after playing at Tennessee during the 2014 season. The Pirates also inked four junior college transfers in offensive lineman Justin Sandifer, athlete/receiver James Summers, inside linebacker Darius Wright and defensive lineman Darius Commissiong to cover immediate needs.

While nine different states are represented in the 2015 class, four played at the prep level in North Carolina and three each hail from neighboring South Carolina and Virginia.

East Carolina recorded an 8-5 overall mark and stood tied for second in the American Athletic Conference during McNeill's fifth campaign as head coach. The Pirates opened the season by winning six of their first seven contests, including victories over ACC members Virginia Tech and North Carolina to return to the Top 25 polls, but closed the year by dropping four of the last six games. ECU did advance to its eighth post-season appearance in the last nine years, but fell to Florida 28-20 in the Birmingham Bowl.

The Pirates, who are expected to return six starters on offense and five on defense, open spring drills March 20 and will host Towson on Sept. 5 to kick off the 2015 season.
