GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The East Carolina University men and women's swimming and diving teams dominated the action Saturday afternoon as the Pirates claimed tri-meet victories against Catawba and UMBC at Minges Natatorium.
The ECU ladies improved to 9-0 with a 174-121 win over UMBC and a 176-112 triumph over Catawba. The men recorded a 158-140 victory against UMBC and a 188-110 victory over Catawba to improve to 5-2 overall.
With the four triumphs, head coach Rick Kobe amassed his 498th career win, leaving him two victories short of becoming the third coach in NCAA history to win 500 dual meets.
The ladies posted 10 first-place finishes and 36 overall medal finishes, sweeping three events and placing one, two in another. The men won nine events and earned 26 medal finishes.
Senior Anna Gibas was the lone member of the women's team to record multiple first-place finishes, claiming victory in the 100 fly (58.07) and 100 back (57.99). Freshman Jera Majeric placed second in the 100 back, touching 0.40 after Gibas, before winning the 200 back (2:06.18).
Lauren Chew (10:23.48), Delaney Fox (10:25.30) and Liz Browne (10:32.12) finished first, second and third in the 1000 free as did Anna Maria Svanbergsson (1:53.09), Tori Angermeier (1:54.91) and Megan Rossi (1:55.80) in the 200 free. Danielle Morrin (2:04.24), Lauren Gray (2:04.38) and Lauren Baker (2:05.81) made a clean sweep of the 200 fly as well.
Colleen Jones received a personal best score of 297.83 to earn first-place in the 3-meter springboard competition, qualifying for the NCAA Zone Championships. Ashley Sams (294.53) and Alicia Roueche (284.93) also posted qualifying scores, finishing second and third respectively.
Cepulis swept the breaststroke events winning the 100 with a time of 57.50 and the 200 with a mark of 2:03.79. Simic touched first in both sprint free events, winning the 50 (21.19) and 100 freestyle (46.14) races.
Dugan captured first in a pair of middle distance free events, claiming victory in the 200 (1:41.12) and 500 (4:37.10).
ECU will be back in action Saturday, Feb. 1 against William & Mary. The meet is schedule for a 1 p.m. at Minges Natatorium.
