BALTIMORE, Md. - The East Carolina University men and women's swimming and diving teams spilt a dual meet with UMBC at the UMBC Aquatic Complex Saturday afternoon. The women's team posted a 162-138 victory, while the men fell 168-132.

Strong performances by senior Holly Berenotto and freshmen Bailie Monahan propelled the Lady Pirates past the Retrievers as they improved to 8-1 on the season.

Berenotto recorded first-place finishes in the 100 and 200 freestyle events, while Monahan triumphed in the 100 and 200 Butterfly.

Freshmen Lauren Chew posted a first-place finish in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:02.11, beating out UMBC's Amy Fay by a tenth of a second.

Sophomore Charlsie Lincoln touched first in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:24.09. Senior Kayla Ford edged out junior teammate Anna Gibas in the 200 backstroke in just under two seconds.

Junior Colleen Jones posted a score of 267.45 to take first place in the 3-meter diving competition to cap off the victory for the Lady Pirates.

Senior Rokas Cepulis was able to sweep the men's breaststroke events, winning the 100 and 200.

 

 

The Pirates dominated the freestyle events with victories in the 100 by sophomore Nikola Simic (47.39) and the 200 by freshmen Michael Dugan (1:42.62), beating the runner-up by three tenths of a second.

Freshmen Sean Piacente was able to gain a first-place finish on the 3-meter board by beating out senior teammate Tyler Dunsmore. Dunsmore recovered with a first place finish on the 1-meter board.

The Pirates return to the pool Feb. 2 to face the College of Charleston inside Minges Natatorium. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
