HOUSTON --- Day three of the 2009 Conference USA Swimming & Diving Championship and Invitational concluded on Friday night at the CRWC Natatorium on the campus of the University of Houston with the East Carolina men's and women's team combining to set six varsity records. Both teams held their position Friday with the men ending the day in third place, while the women remained in fourth place

SMU won four events during the women's championship Friday and finished with 599.5 points. SMU increased its lead to nearly 200 points over second-place Houston, which won three to move ahead of Rice. The Cougars have scored 419 points to surpass the Owls, which are now in third with 402 points. East Carolina is fourth with 354.5 points and Marshall is fifth with 142.

ECU senior Amanda Duncan established a new record in the 100-yard butterfly with a NCAA'B' cut time of 53.67 and earned a second place finish. She also helped the 200-yard freestyle relay time break the varsity record.

Duncan was joined by Jenna Stewart, Kelsey Brosi and Kali Gaskill on the relay team that earned a fourth place finish with a school record time of 1:33.02.

ECU is competing alongside conference member SMU in the C-USA Men's Invitational with Hawaii, Cal State Bakersfield and North. SMU leads that event after day three with 619 points, followed by Hawaii with 506.5 points. East Carolina sits in third with 358 points, while North Dakota (302) is in fourth and Cal State Bakersfield (282.5) is in fifth.

Pirate sophomore Thiago Cavalcanti earned a third place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with an ECU record-breaking time of 1:37.80. It was his second record-breaking time of the invitational. He also set the varsity record in the 500-yard freestyle Thursday night.

Freshman Travis Stauder also earned a third place finish while setting a varsity record. Stauder completed the 100-yard breaststroke race in a time of 55.64, eclipsing the previous record by 0.48.

As the leadoff swimmer on the 200-yard freestyle relay team, junior Jason Guzewich broke the school record in the 50-yard freestyle by 0.03 touching in a time of 20.48. In part because of Guzewich's time, the relay team also established a new varsity mark.

Guzewich and Cavalcanti teamed with Ailton Temotio and Adam Papendick to finish fourth with a time of 1:21.61.

The final day of the event begins at 11 a.m., Saturday with the preliminaries of the 200-yard back, 100-yard free, 200-yard breast, 200-yard butterfly and 1650 free. Men's and women's platform diving preliminaries will begin around 2 p.m, The finals for those events are slated to begin around 7 p.m. and the event will conclude with the trophy presentation and specialty awards.
