Swimming Teams Sweep Tri-Meet

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The East Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept a tri-meet from Catawba and College of Charleston on Saturday. The Pirates posted the top score or fastest time in 24 of the 26 events.

The men's squad improved to 6-1 by defeating Catawba, 140-75, and College of Charleston, 142-83. The ladies team posted a 138-90 win over CofC and a 161-60 victory over Catawba to improve to 7-1 this season.

"We posted some really fast times today," stated Pirate head coach Rick Kobe. "I thought this was an excellent way for us to end this portion of our dual meet schedule and prepare to swim against some the best teams from the ACC, SEC and Big East conferences."

A total of 15 ECU swimmers and divers posted the fastest times or top diving scores of the meet, including sophomore Jenna Stewart who proved to be the fastest swimmer in pool by the winning both the 50-yard (24.18) and 100-yard freestyle (52.71).

Fellow sophomore Thiago Cavalcanti claimed a pair of first place finishes by winning the 500-yard (4:31.36) and 1,000-yard freestyle (9:38.19).

Senior Matt Larson and freshman Katie Yamamoto gave ECU a clean sweep of the diving events as each recorded the top scores in the one-meter and three-meter diving competitions.

The Pirates return to action beginning Thursday, Nov. 20 at the Gamecock Invitational in Columbia, S.C.
