GREENVILLE, N.C. --- East Carolina concluded competition at the 27th annual Janis Hape Dowd Nike Cup Swimming and Diving Championships with 32 championship finalist finishes, including nine medal finishes, over the weekend at Koury Natatorium on the University of North Carolina campus.
Senior Holly Berenotto captured first-place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:50.28, touching 0:00.35 ahead of NC State's Julianna Prim. She also helped the 200 medley relay team claim second-place and the 400 medley relay unit to a third-place finish.
Junior Anna Gibas turned in an ECU record performance in the 100 backstroke, finishing with a second-place time of 55.80 to break the former record set by Amy Hendrix in 2001 by 0.06. She also competed in the finals of the 100-yard butterfly and earned an eighth-place finish as well as being a part of both aforementioned relay teams.
Sophomore Lauren Chew posted three of the top 10 fastest times in school history in a trio of freestyle events. Her time of 16:51.11 in the 1650-yard freestyle was three seconds faster than the previous second-best time, while her times in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.92) and 1000-yard freestyle (10:10.88) rank as eighth and third-best times in ECU swimming lore.
Freshman Bailie Monahan also posted a trio of top 10 times in three separate races: 100 butterfly (56.03), 200 butterfly (2:02.56) and 200 IM (2:05.90). Her times ranks sixth, seventh and 10th in their respective events. Freshman Megan Sellers posted the ninth-best ECU time in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.33).
The men's team posted eight ECU all-time top 10 times, led by junior Attila Kiraly's varsity record-breaking performance in the 200-yard backstroke. He broke his own record of 1:48.17 by 0.19 (1:47.98).
Freshman Justinas Bilis missed setting the men's varsity record in the 100-yard freestyle by 0.45, but posted the second-fastest time in school history (45.04) en route to a fifth-place finish. He also posted the third-fastest ECU times in the 50 freestyle (20.50) and 100 backstroke (49.99), where he captured third-place.
Freshmen Macon Crowder (1:40.78) and Michael Dugan (1:41.00) now rank eighth and ninth all-time at ECU in the 200-yard freestyle, while sophomore Andre Smedstad is the owner of the seventh-best 200-backstroke time (1:51.50).
Bilis, Cepulis, Smedstad and sophomore Nikola Simic teamed to place second in the 200-yard medley relay, while senior Geoffrey Bobsin and freshman Trevor Irish joined Bilis and Simic to claim third in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Senior diver Tyler Dunsmore captured fifth-place in the men's 1-meter springboard competition with a score of 285.95. Senior Kirstie Russell placed seventh in finals of the women's 1-meter event with a score of 227.05 and junior Colleen Jones also placed seventh in finals on the 3-meter with a score of 235.25.
The final results of the Nike Cup had the ECU women's team (676.5) finishing in third-place behind NC State (933) and North Carolina (816) with the Pirate men's team (537) capturing fourth-place behind the Wolfpack (1195.5), Tar Heels (901) and Navy (778.5).
