IRVING, Texas - East Carolina junior swimmer Lauren Gray was named one of the 16 student-athletes that will receive the Conference USA Winter Spirit of Service Award, it was announced by C- USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky on Wednesday.
The C-USA Spirit of Service Award is designed to recognize the community service efforts of the league's student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport. The Spirit of Service Award is presented three times throughout the season, with today's honorees representing Conference USA's winter sports: men's and women's basketball, women's swimming and diving, men's and women's indoor track and field.
Gray has been a key performer for the East Carolina swim team the past three years. The communications/public relations major has been actively involved in a number of community projects, including Girls Scouts of America, ECU Writes, Relay for Life, Swim Across America, Special Olympics and Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. Gray has been a mainstay on the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and was a recipient of the C-USA Academic Medal for maintaining a cumulative 3.75 GPA.
A native of Roanoke, Va., she ranks among the school's all-time top-10 in the 500 freestyle, 200 butterfly and 400 IM.
