GREENVILLE, N.C. - The College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) recognized the East Carolina women's swimming and diving squad as a Scholar All-American Team after boasting the highest GPA (3.62) among all Division I institutions during the 2013 spring semester.
The Team Scholar All-American award is presented to college and university swimming and diving teams, who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The ECU men's squad was also named to the list after compiling a 3.11 team GPA.
Attila Kiraly, Bailie Monahan and Dan Woods were each named Honorable Mention Scholar All-Americans. This award is presented to college and university swimmers and divers, who have achieved a GPA of 3.5 or higher, for the semester or cumulative average, and have achieved a "B" time standard, but have not qualified to compete in their respective national championship.
"I can't tell you how proud we are," Pirate head coach Rick Kobe said. "To watch these student-athletes excel in the pool and in the classroom is very gratifying."
Earlier this year, the NCAA gave a special public recognition award to the women's swimming team as it each achieved an APR rate in the top 10 percent of all squads nationwide, which was a first for the program.
