Brie Berkowitz returned to her alma mater in August 2012 as an assistant cross country and track & field coach. The former ECU cross country and track & field standout has spent the last two seasons mentoring both the men's and women's distance runners.
Since coming back to Greenville, Berkowitz has helped the women's cross country squad to back-to-back NCAA Southeast Regional appearances. Most recently, the Lady Pirates recorded a 17th-place finish at the 2013 NCAA Southeast Regional after placing fourth at the Conference USA Championships. On the men's side, the Pirates finished ninth at the 2013 C-USA Championships.
In her first season coaching the Pirates' cross country squad, Berkowitz helped the Lady Pirates to a program-best ninth-place finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional. ECU's team finish was the highest ranking at an NCAA Regional event in school history as it topped the previous ranking of 11th by the 2011 team.
The former student-athlete, who competed from 2003-07, supervises the cross country distance runners, as well as assists in all aspects of track and field. As a student-athlete at ECU, Berkowitz competed in the 400-meter hurdles and the pole vault. In fact, Berkowitz and her relay team of Lindsay Dolan, Lanaire Lindo, and Jaslyn Grullon still hold the East Carolina record of 1:01.59 set in 2007 at the Florida Relays in the 100-meter shuttle relays.
Prior to her return to East Carolina, Berkowitz worked at the University of Miami as the travel and events coordinator in the Hurricane athletic department. She also had stints working for the Miami Heat and Florida Panthers in their respective sales departments.
Coaching is in her blood as her father, Marvin Berkowtiz, is a cross country/track and field coach at Redlion Area Senior High School in Pennsylvania. The elder Berkowitz is a former Penn State weightlifter, while Berkowitz's mother, Darla, ran cross country at York College (Pa.). She is looking to follow in her father's footstep and stay on the track for a long time to come.
While a student-athlete at East Carolina, Berkowitz earned a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education and a Master's Degree in Sport Management. While pursuing her graduate degree, the York, Pa., native worked as a graduate assistant in academics and as a volunteer coach with the track and field squad.
