FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. –Senior Tynita Butts matched a career-best and ECU school-record mark to place second and earn her fifth all-time All-America selection in the high jump Friday at the NCAA Championships which are being held at the Randal Tyson Track Complex on the campus of the University of Arkansas.

“Words can’t express how proud we are of Tynita Butts,” Head Coach Curt Kraft said. “It’s safe to say that what she has accomplished here at East Carolina University will leave everlasting memories. It’s satisfying for us coaches to see that she is not only excelling at a high level athletically, but academically as well. Tynita is the epitome of how a student-athlete is to represent an institution. To say that she is going to be missed would be an understatement.”

Butts was among 16 participants in the women’s high jump finals and her mark of 1.90m (6-02.75) earned her a second-place finish. The Alexandria, Va., native finished behind senior Brigetta Barrett from Arizona who won the event with a mark of 1.95m (6-04.75).

This was Butts’ fourth consecutive National Championship appearance and the highest finish of her career. Previously she finished seventh and fourth in the indoor competition as well as seventh and third in the outdoor championships.

In her career, Butts has collected a pair of outdoor high jump All-America accolades, and an outdoor long jump honor to go along with two indoor high jump efforts.
