ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. –East Carolina junior thrower Kayla Padgett earned an 11th place finish at the NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships in the 20-pound weight throw on Friday. She was the only representative from ECU.
Padgett made her NCAA Indoor Championships debut on the first day of competition and recorded a mark of 20.15-meters (66-01.50) in the women’s weight throw for an 11th-place finish. Brea Garrett from Texas A&M won the event with a heave of 22.15-meters (72-08.00).
“It wasn’t exactly a great day for Kayla,” head coach Curt Kraft said. “Sometimes things don’t go according to plan, but that’s kind of how life is. We are still very proud of all that Kayla has accomplished during the indoor season. Now it’s time to turn our attention to the outdoor season.”
A Shallotte, N.C., native, Padgett earned a spot at the NCAA Indoor Championships after a solid junior season in which she set the East Carolina school record in the 20-pound weight throw with a mark of 21.95-meters (72-00.25). She won the Conference USA Indoor Championships with a tally of 20.87-meters (68-05.75) in the weight throw en route to being selected to the C-USA First Team. She also helped the ECU women’s squad win the Conference USA title for the second time in three years.
Padgett will lead the Pirates into the outdoor season beginning Friday, March 21 at the Carolina Relays in Chapel Hill, N.C. The two-day meet will conclude on Saturday, March 22.
