WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - After a highly successful indoor campaign, East Carolina opened its outdoor season with a strong showing in the Wake Forest Open at Kentner Stadium.

In all, the Pirates posted 15 top-five finishes while freshman Kayla Padgett captured her first career outdoor event title by topping the field in the discus.

After taking third in the prelims of the 100-meter dash, Erin Tucker finished fourth in the finals with a time of 11.85. Then, in the 800-meter run, Brittany Copeland took third by clocking in at 2:13.12 before Britney Kott ended up fifth with a time of 4:37.38 in the 1,500-meter run. Amanda Tomlin also checked in among the top 10 in the 1,500 with an eighth-place result (4:42.12).

Copeland added another third-place showing in the 3,000-meter run, the event in which she won the league title during the indoor season, with a time of 9:49.81. Amanda Lapp was seventh right behind her teammate, checking in at 10:11.61.

With the pole vault field split into two groups, Rachel Webb snatched fifth in the higher-seeded flight at 3.50 meters while Katherine Gray was also fifth in her grouping with a mark of 3.05 meters.

Padgett complemented her event title in the discus, where she threw 45.71, by snatching 10th in the shot put (13.41 meters). Sunni Massop, a transfer student from the University of Wisconsin, ended up fourth in the discus, producing a throw of 42.58 meters. Rounding out the field performances for the women was Rebecca Cooper who racked up fourth place in the javelin with a mark of 40.49 meters.

As for the men, Joseph Samuels captured fourth in the 110-hurdles event, clocking in at 14.57 while Quinton Harley earned sixth in the 400-meter hurdles race with a time of 52.74.

In the 4x400 relay, the tandem of Harley, Taylor Sykes, Patrick Jones and Ben McKinzie finished just outside of the top five, ending up in sixth by running a 3:14.22.

Making his first appearance since the 2011 outdoor season, Drew Kanz began his campaign with a fifth-place showing in the high jump, recording a mark of 2.02 meters. ECU also produced athletes finishing third and fourth in the pole vault as Stephen Hodapp and Aaron Zakula posted marks of 4.75 and 4.60 meters respectively.

Austin Lewis impressed in his first outdoor long jump attempt of the year, finishing in second place with a mark of 7.24 meters. The javelin event also featured a second-place showing by Matthew McConaughey (67.57 meters) as well as a sixth-place result for Sam Barnhardt (60.61 meters).

East Carolina continues its outdoor exploits next weekend at the VMI Invitational. The meet is scheduled for March 23-24 in Lexington, Va.
