Junior All-America Tynita Butts

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- With the Conference USA Outdoor Championship looming just weeks away, East Carolina made the short trip to Chapel Hill and competed in the North Carolina Invitational at the Irwin Belk Track.
Junior All-America Tynita Butts easily won the high jump, her second victory in as many attempts this outdoor campaign. She posted a mark of 1.81 meters to out-distance herself from the field. The men's 4x100 relay tandem of Quinton Harley, Desmond Lawrence, Austin Lewis and Antonial Marshallalso emerged with an event title, clocking in at 41.07.
On the track, sophomore All-America Aiesha Goggins and Tyshonda Hawkins took fourth and fifth in the 200-meter dash with times of 24.30 and 24.32 while Brooke Kott captured sixth in the 1,500-meter run at 4:30.35. Natalie Nelson, Alexis Pitts, Victoria Robinson and Kathryn Warner teamed up to snatch second place in the 4x400 relay, finishing the event in 3:58.56.
ECU made its mark in the pole vault as Rachel Webb, Abbey Way and Warner all recorded an effort of 3.73 meters - the third-highest in the event. The Pirates' field performances also included second-place results by Tiffany Harris in the long jump (6.06 meters) and Krista Vincent'sseason high in the javelin (41.51 meters).
As for the men, Lewis showed his versatility by finishing fourth in the 200 with a time of 22.01 and third in the long jump at 7.21 meters. Desmond Lawrencealso turned in a top-three standing in the 100-meter dash with a third-place showing of 10.86.
In the field, a trio of second-place finishes was turned in by Miles Coats, Montrell Morrow and Sam Barnhardt - all season-best marks. Coats posted a mark of 14.88 meters in the triple jump while Morrow threw 53.47 meters in the discus and Sam Barnhardtproduced a heave of 64.54 meters in the javelin.
East Carolina returns to action next weekend, traveling across the state for the Charlotte Invitational. The meet is scheduled for April 20-21 at Transamerica Field.
