NEW ORLEANS, La. - After winning the league's indoor title earlier this year, the East Carolina women's track and field team produced its highest-ever outdoor finish Sunday in the 2012 Conference USA Outdoor Championships at Tad Gormley Stadium. The ladies garnered a total of 132.16 points - 28 behind champion and No. 18 UCF.

The men took fourth place with 126 points, falling just a point short of Tulsa and six off second-place UTEP. The result matched the highest for the men in their C-USA outdoor history. For setting the league record in the shot put yesterday, senior Dennis Aliotta was recognized as the men's Performer of the Meet.

The final day of action produced four event titles for ECU. Junior Quinton Harley won the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 51.28 and the men's 4x100 relay tandem of Desmond Lawrence, Austin Lewis, Harley and Antonial Marshall captured the crown by clocking in at 40.41. Junior All-America Tynita Butts posted a mark of 1.85 meters in the high jump to win her third career and consecutive league outdoor championship while the women's 4x400 relay squad, consisting of Aiesha Goggins, Tiffany Harris, Tania Minkins and Tyshonda Hawkins topped the field with a time of 3:36.92

The women's 4x100 team of Minkins, Hawkins, Erin Tucker and Harris, while not winning the event, turned in a program-record time of 45.05. Harris and Hawkins also captured second and third in the 400-meter dash - clocking in at 53.00 and 53.73. . A number of Pirate athletes on both the men's and women's side found the podium Sunday, with senior Abbey Way and freshman Kathryn Warner matching each other at 3.80 meters in the pole vault to finish tied for second and junior Montrell Morrow and sophomore Chloe Early taking second and third in the discus event. Morrow posted a mark of 50.61 meters while Early recorded a 43.91-meter toss.

Lawrence and Lewis scored 14 points (second and third places) in the 100-meter dash with respective times of 10.63 and 10.65. Wrapping up the men's medal haul was junior Miles Coats who turned in personal best mark of 14.94 meters in the triple jump, capturing the bronze. In the women's 1,500 and 800-meter events, senior Brittany Copeland and junior Britney Kott earned the silver and bronze with respective times of 4:23.18 and 2:08.97.

The NCAA East Preliminary Round is scheduled for May 24-26 at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla. The top 48 athletes in each event in the East region will take part and the participants will be announced Thursday, May 17. In 2011, East Carolina sent a program single-season-record 15 athletes to the meet.
