ECU Wins Four Titles At C-USA Outdoor Meet

ORLANDO, Fla. - Senior Maegan Lewis, sophomore Dennis Aliotta and freshmen Matthew McConaughey and Drew Kanz won their respective events, the hammer throw, shot put, javelin and high jump, to highlight the Pirates' first full day of the 2010 Conference USA Outdoor Championships at the UCF Track and Soccer Complex.
The women are in third-place, 14 points behind SMU, while the men scored 62 points Saturday and are in second, two points back of Houston.
Lewis' hammer title, a heave of 57.44 meters is the second consecutive for the Charlotte, N.C., native while McConaughey broke his own school record in the javelin for the third time this season by throwing 69.31 meters. Aliotta finished over one full meter ahead of the field, recording a mark of 17.81 to make it a clean sweep of both indoor and outdoor shot put titles. Kanz won his title in a jump-off against Southern Miss sophomore Marcus Norwood, clearing 2.13 meters.
For the men, Mario Briscoe and Randy Bolton are into the finals of the 110-meter hurdles with times of 14.42 and 14.71, respectively. Ron Wright finished sixth in the preliminaries of the 400-meter dash at 48.28 and will run in the finals tomorrow. ECU will also have three representatives in the finals of the 100-meter dash as Austin Lewis, Isiah Gyasi and Antonial Marshall turned in times of 10.53, 10.56 and 10.69. Marshall also advanced to the finals of the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 21.47. Mario Briscoe produced the best time (52.14) in the prelims of 400-meter hurdles to easily qualify for the finals.
The Pirates wrap up competition tomorrow and are in position to challenge for both team titles. Action gets underway at 1 p.m. with the women's javelin throw.
