JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The East Carolina track and field team had six student-athletes turn in qualifying times during the preliminaries of the NCAA East Regional. The Pirates will be represented by Tynita Butts, Tyshonda Hawkins, Cameron Hudson, Tania Minkins, Joseph Samuels and Erin Tucker in the semifinals of the NCAA East Regional on Saturday, May 31, for a chance to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
The half-dozen Pirates will see action in seven events as Hudson qualified in both the 200-meter dash and the long jump. Hudson advances after recording a new personal-best time of 20.95 in the 200-meter dash preliminaries. The sophomore sprinter also registered a qualifying mark of 7.50-meters (24' 7.25") in the long jump.
In addition to Hudson, redshirt senior jumper Joseph Samuels recorded a career-best time of 14.03 in the 110-meter hurdles preliminaries to qualify for the semifinals. His time ranks him fifth all-time at East Carolina.
Senior sprinter Tania Minkins also tallied a new personal-best time for herself as she finished the 200-meter dash in 23.44 to qualify for the semifinals. She is ranked second in the ECU record book. Teammate Tyshonda Hawkins will also see action in the semifinals of the 200-meter dash as she advanced with a time of 23.45.
Erin Tucker, a senior from Concord, N.C., competed in the 100-meter hurdles and earned a qualifying time of 13.42 in the event.
The final qualifier for East Carolina was redshirt senior jumper Tynita Butts. The product out of Alexandria, Va., posted a distance of 1.81-meters (5'11.25") in the high jump as she secured a spot in the semifinals.
Saturday's field events begin at noon with the men's pole vault and conclude at 9:45 p.m. with the women's 4x400-meter relay.
Those that record qualifying times on Saturday punch their ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., beginning Wednesday, June 11 and wrapping Saturday, June 14.
