Freshman Aiesha Goggins captured 10th in the 400-meter dash Wednesday at the NCAA Outdoor Championhips
June 8, 2011
DES MOINES, Iowa - Freshman Aiesha Goggins fell just short of advancing to the final race of the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championhips Wednesday, posting a time of 52.75 in the 400-meter dash to finish fourth in the second heat at Drake Stadium.
Goggins was just .04 seconds behind Ashley Kelly of Illinois for eighth overall and a place in Friday's final. The Conference USA indoor and outdoor 400-meter champion wrapped up a fine individual rookie campaign, as her season-best time of 51.94 at the outdoor league meet was a C-USA and school record and is currently among the top 40 in the world.
The Durham, N.C., native was just the second female runner in program history to reach the NCAA Outdoor Championships as Dava Rhodes competed in the 10,000-meter run in 1994.
Although she did not garner the opportunity to chase the national title in the 400, Goggins will join fellow rookies Tyshonda Hawkins and Tania Minkins as well as sophomore Tiffany Harris as the 4x400 relay gets underway tomorrow at 9 p.m. The Pirates will run in the second heat along with Iowa, Ole Miss, Kentucky, Penn State, LSU, Oregon and Arizona.
