Feb. 6, 2014
GREENVILLE, N.C. -On the heels of breaking six new school records, the East Carolina track and field program will head to Blacksburg, Va., to compete in the Virginia Tech Elite Meet. The competition begins on Friday, February 7, and wraps on Saturday, February 8.
"This weekend's track meet is going to be very exciting," Head Coach Curt Kraft said. "Our programs are going to have the opportunity to compete against some of the best teams in the country as we go up against eight ACC schools and three SEC universities. This competition should allow us to improve our times and marks and get us ready for the Conference USA Indoor Championship."
With four meets under their belts, the Pirates have set seven new school records as the women's squad has set four and the men's side has tallied three.
Junior thrower Kayla Padgett has reset the standard in the women's weight throw a number of times, most recently posting a mark of 21.95m (72-00.25) last weekend. Senior Erin Tucker shaved .03 seconds off her previous school record time in the 60-meter hurdles to set a new school record time of 8.31. Senior Brooke Kott turned in a school-record setting performance in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:52.03 and freshman Aminah Ghaffar took down a 17-year old school record in the pentathlon after recording 3,248 points last weekend.
On the men's side, Henry Johnson set a new school record in the pole vault after registering a clearance of 5.00m (16-04.75). Freshman Avion Jones tallied a school-record mark in the high jump with a mark of 2.17m (7-01.50) and Dylan Spadaccini bested his own school record in the heptathlon with 4,793 points.
This weekend's meet marks the second competition in Blacksburg in which the Pirates will see action. Earlier this season, East Carolina competed at the Virginia Tech Invitational and Padgett set a new school record in the women's weight throw with a first-place finish in the event. Additionally, the Pirates won five events in the competition.
