Pirates Set to Compete at SPIRE Invitational
Feb. 7, 2013
GREENVILLE, N.C. –The East Carolina track and field program hits the road to Geneva, Ohio, to compete in the SPIRE Invitational beginning on Friday, February 8 and ending Saturday, February 9.
“This is our last meet before the Conference USA Indoor Championships,” Head Coach Curt Kraft said. “So I think it’s important that we go into this meet both mentally and physically prepared to compete. It was a year ago at this time that we came out of this meet feeling really good about who we were as teams going into the conference championships. As always we are excited to see continued improvement.”
The Pirates look to continue their impressive start as they set five school records in their last two meets at the Virginia Tech Invitational and the Penn State National. In their last meet, ECU was led by senior Tynita Butts’ record-setting performance in the women’s high jump. Butts notched the second-best mark in the nation, set an ECU record, as well as a new meet and facility record with her personal-best mark of 6-02.75 (1.90m) for a first-place finish en route to being named Conference USA Co-Female Athlete of the Week.
With a break in action last week, the Pirates used the week to prepare for the SPIRE Invitational which is an invitation only NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field competition which features the top programs in the nation. ECU will travel more than 70 student-athletes to compete in the meet.
The SPIRE Invitational marks ECU’s last indoor competition before the Conference USA Indoor Championships on February 23 and 24, in Birmingham, Ala.
