IRVING, Texas - Avion Jones was named Co-Conference USA Male Athlete of the Week along with Anthony Rotich of UTEP as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon. It is the first-ever honor for Jones.
"We're extremely proud of Avion," Head Coach Curt Kraft said. "He has had an exceptional season and we know that there are bigger things that lie ahead for him. He is one of the finest high jumpers in the country. His work ethic is phenomenal. He is very focused and sets his goals high and goes for it. He's been training with [senior high jumper] Drew Kanz and that has brought out the best in Avion. He is a big time competitor. I can't say enough positive things about him. We're just so proud of him."
The sophomore jumper earned the accolades after setting the East Carolina school record in the men's high jump over the weekend at the JDL Fast Track Invitational. At the meet, Jones registered a mark of 2.19-meters (7-02.25) to capture first in the event. His tally was nearly three inches better than the second place finisher who recorded a mark of 2.11-meters (6-11.00). With his new personal-best mark, Jones is now tied for 14th in the nation in the men's high jump.
Jones and the Pirates will be back in action on Saturday, February 22, at the Dennis Craddock Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C., hosted by the University of North Carolina.
