GREENVILLE, N.C. –Seniors Tynita Butts and Montrell Morrow will represent East Carolina track and field at the NCAA Indoor National Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., this weekend. The two-day event begins on Friday, March 8 and concludes Saturday, March 9.

“Our coaching staff is very excited for Tynita Butts and Montrell Morrow as they have qualified for the NCAA Indoor National Championships,” Head Coach Curt Kraft said. “This is Tynita’s fourth consecutive Indoor National Championship and Montrell’s second in two years. What these two have accomplished is no small feat. Anytime you qualify for a National Championship that is a huge accomplishment.”

Butts is a five-time All-America selection. The Alexandria, Va., native has collected two outdoor high jump All-America accolades and an outdoor long jump honor to go along with a pair of indoor high jump efforts. Butts will make her fourth appearance in as many years at the Indoor NCAA Championships.

This season, Butts has won four indoor high jump events as she notched a then-second-best mark in the nation, ECU school record, as well as a new meet and facility record with a personal-best mark of 1.90m (6-02.75) for a first-place finish at the prestigious Penn State National. That performance earned Butts her first-ever Conference USA Indoor Female Athlete of the Week honor.

Morrow enters the NCAA Championships after having competed last year in the men’s weight throw. The Burlington, N.C., native is a 2012 All-America selection and has won back-to-back C-USA men’s weight throw titles. Morrow is coming off a season-best 21.00m (68-10.75) throw to set the standard at the Alex Wilson Invitational at Notre Dame. Morrow ranks second on the East Carolina Indoor Top 10 list with a career-best mark of 21.15m (69-05.00) which he set last season.

“With only 16 qualifying in each event in the entire country, it is a testimonial to their athletic ability as well as their ability to focus themselves on an entire four-year career in both academics and athletics,” Kraft stated. “I know that both of them have very high expectations going into this meet.”

Following the Indoor NCAA National Championships, the Pirates will open the outdoor season at Charlotte beginning on Thursday, March 14 and concluding on Saturday, March 16.
