GREENVILLE, N.C. –The East Carolina track and field team heads to Houston, Texas for the 2014 Conference USA Outdoor Championships. The event is scheduled to begin Thursday, May 15 and conclude Sunday, May 18 at Holloway Field and Ley Track with Rice serving as the host institution.
Last season, ECU saw its men’s team place fifth and the women’s squad finish ninth in the outdoor championships. However, this season the Pirates are coming off of a successful indoor season in which the women’s squad won the C-USA Indoor Championships and the men placed third. East Carolina is looking to bring that momentum along with its solid outdoor performances into the C-USA Championship this weekend.
“I think both our men’s and women’s teams realized what the task at hand is,” Head coach Curt Kraft said. “They have been waiting for this Conference Championship meet for a long time. Both teams are very excited and focused coming into this meet.”
The Pirates met as a team earlier in the week to prepare for the C-USA Championships and discuss expectations and goals.
“We talked about three key things that will need to come into play in order for us to be successful: leadership, experience and momentum,” Kraft explained. “I think both squads have been battle tested over and over again. The goal of this meet is very clear; that is to contend for a Conference USA title on both sides. But more importantly we need to set personal records, school records, regional qualifying marks and have individual conference champions.”
With 2014 being the last year East Carolina is a member of Conference USA, the Pirates are looking to go out with a bang.
The Conference USA Championships begin Thursday, May 15 at 1:30 p.m. with the heptathlon. The decathlon will follow at 2 p.m. Friday’s events start at 1:30 p.m. with the conclusion of the multi events. The men’s and women’s hammer throws and as well as the 10,000-meter runs will also take place Friday.
