IRVING, Texas - East Carolina graduate student Rachel Boerner has been named a recipient of the 2012 spring Conference USA Spirit of Service Award, according to an announcement Tuesday by the league.

Boerner is currently working on her master's degree in medical physics and earned a spot on the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll for the 2011-12 academic year. She transferred to ECU this year after completing her undergraduate degree from Calvin College, where she earned Division III All-America accolades in the 400-meter dash in 2010 and 2011 (indoor and outdoor).

Competing for The Pirates during the 2012 indoor season, Boerner took second in the 400 at Christopher Newport and 17th at the Conference USA Indoor Championships. The East Carolina women won their first-ever C-USA title, indoor or outdoor, at the meet in Birmingham, Ala.
