July 1, 2012
EUGENE, Ore. - Pirate All-America Tynita Butts cleared 1.84 meters in the high jump finals of the 2012 Olympic Trials Saturday night, finishing in a tie for seventh place and just missing making the American Olympic squad. The top three athletes booked their spots in London.
After successfully reaching 1.79 meters on her first attempt, Butts jumped over the bar at 1.84 meters but could not set a new personal best when the bar was raised to 1.89 meters.
American record holder Chaunte Lowe and two-time defending champion Brigetta Barrett jumped 2.01 meters to earn a berth to the Olympics and are joined by Amy Acuff, who cleared 1.95 meters to nab the last spot.
Butts will still have the opportunity to represent the United States early next month when she takes part in the North American, Central American and Caribbean U-23 Championships. That meet is scheduled for July 6-8 in Guanajuato, Mexico.
