MOSCOW - Former East Carolina track & field standout LaShawn Merritt won the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championship in the men's 400-meter dash en route to clocking a new lifetime best.
Merritt won the world title for the second time in his career as he previously was victorious in the men's 400-meter dash in 2009. This year, he recorded a new personal best time of 43.73 which was more than half a second faster than the second place finisher.
A native of Portsmouth, Va., Merritt competed at ECU during the 2004-05 season. While donning purple and gold, Merritt set the school record in the men's 200-meter dash (20.40) and 400-meter dash (44.93). Both of his records still stand today.
