BOONE, N.C. –The East Carolina cross country team opened the 2013 campaign with a strong start as the Pirate women placed third and the men took fourth at the Covered Bridge Invitational. The ECU women’s squad had four top 20 finishers, while redshirt senior Cory Hampshire finished in the top 10.
As a team, Florida State won the Covered Bridge Invitational on both the men’s and women’s sides, and Appalachian State placed second on both sides.
Brooke Kott was the top finisher for the Lady Pirates as she recorded a time of 19:05.01 for a 12th-place finish in the 5K. She was followed by senior Stefanie Fresenius (19:10.34), freshman Caitlyn Sheva (19:17.31), and senior Chelsea Hollingsworth (19:20.51), who placed 15th, 17th, and 19th, respectively. Sheva turned in a solid performance in her first collegiate match of her career.
On the men’s side, Hampshire led ECU with a time of 26:10.39 for eighth place in the 8K. The redshirt senior from Shenandoah Junction, W.Va., was the only Pirate on both sides to finish in the top 10. “Overall, it was a good meet,” Assistant Coach Brie Berkowitz said. “We had a strong start and competed well as we went up against Florida State which is consistently one of the best teams in the nation. Coach (Dan) Lee and I are happy with how the meet went. We saw some very promising performances.”
The Pirates will have a week to build on the solid efforts they turned in at Covered Bridge Invitational as their next action will take place on Friday, September 6, at the Seahawk Invitational hosted by UNC Wilmington.
