2012 Seahawk-Invitational Results
WILMINGTON, N.C. - The East Carolina men's and women's cross country teams both opened the 2012 season with team victories on Friday evening, Sept. 7, at the Seahawk Invitational in Wilmington, N.C.
The men's victory at the Seahawk Invitational was the program's fourth overall championship at the event, but the first since the run of three straight from 1998-2000. The women's championship was the program's first at the event since they also captured the crown in 2000. The men's team earned 28 points this year to finish ahead of UNCW, while the women's team earned 15 points to lead the other eight other schools in the competition.
Senior Antonio Palmer began his final season for ECU with the individual victory in the 5k event out of 81 total competitors. Palmer's time of 15:42.94 was a personal record and ranks him 13th at ECU in a 5k event. The Gaithersburg, Md. native was followed in the standings for ECU by redshirt sophomore Chase Miller. Miller placed fifth in a personal-record time of 16:03.61. Junior Jakub Trzasalski ranked seventh (16:06.61) the meet for ECU. Freshman John Young placed ninth in his first collegiate competition (16:07.79) and redshirt sophomore Cory Hampshire finished 10th with his time of 16:14.18 to round out the top 10 for ECU.
The women's team took the first six spots in their race. Redshirt junior Stacey Gonzalez earned the individual victory for the Pirates in a person-record time of 18:17.69. Junior Bjork Olsen ran an 18:24.06 to place second. Redshirt sophomore Stefanie Fresenius also ran a person-best 5k time (18:32.50) to rank third. ECU's Brooke Kott finished fourth (18:43.32) as an unattached runner. Freshman Shewit Weldense started her ECU career and placed fifth (18:46.31). Junior Chelsea Hollingsworth finished sixth for the Pirates (18:47.31). Rookie Jessica Rossabi placed 10th in her time of 19:10.34.
The Pirates will next compete at the adidas XC Invitational on Friday, Sept. 14 in Cary, N.C.
