Cross Country Takes Third At Adidas Invitational

CARY, N.C. - East Carolina's cross country programs both finished third in the team competition at the Adidas Invitational at the WakeMed cross country course in Cary, N.C. on Friday, Sept. 14. Redshirt junior Stacey Gonzalez was the highest finisher for the women in 12th place of 131 competitors. Redshirt sophomore Chase Miller finished 15th to pace the ECU men out of 100 runners that placed. The women's team earned 63 pts., with the men checking in with 78 pts. North Carolina State won both meets with point totals of 24 for the women and 15 for the men.
Gonzalez's 17:42.0 time in the 5k race ranks as the 13th best time that has been recorded in that event for the ECU women and earned her 12th place on the day. Gonzalez has been the top finisher for ECU in each of the first two meets this season.
Junior Bjork Olsen placed just behind her teammate in the event and finished 14th with her time of 17:49.2. The time was ECU's 20th best time in a 5k event. Other top finishers for ECU include junior Chelsea Hollingsworth (15th - 17:59.8), redshirt sophomore Stefanie Fresenius (18th - 18:16.7) and freshman Shewit Weldense (19th - 18:27.9).
Miller led the ECU men with his finish in a time of 15:30.12. His time places him tied for seventh in a 5k event at ECU along with former runner Zack Montijo.
Redshirt junior Cory Hampshire placed just behind Miller in 18th in his time of 15:37.5. Hampshire's time was the 11th best 5k for an ECU men's runner and was his fourth top-20 ranking in the career record book. Other top finishers for ECU include junior Jakub Trzasalski (19th - 15:47.7), redshirt freshman Brather Cline (22nd - 15:54.9), freshman John Young (27th - 16:16.2), senior Antonio Palmer (36th - 16:45.9) and sophomore Tevin Richardson (39thh - 16:48.3).
The Pirates now return home to host the ECU Pirate Invitational on Friday, Sept. 21 at Overton's Lake Kristi.
