Men's Cross Country Takes 10th in 8K at Paul Short Run
Oct. 5, 2013
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Despite difficult weather conditions, the East Carolina men's and women’s cross country teams competed in the prestigious Paul Short Run at Lehigh University on Saturday morning.
The men's team had an impressive showing, despite a heat index reading well above 90 and an unusually large number of runners being treated for heat disorders.
“Even though we’re from a warmer climate, I can tell you it was really tough for the athletes to deal with the heat and humidity," said head coach Dan Lee. "So far, we’ve run all of our races this season in North Carolina and none of them had weather as tough to deal with as this one.”
The Pirate men posted a 10th-place finish our of 46 teams in the 8K race behind an eighth-place finish by redshirt junior Chase Miller, who completed the course with a time of 25:38. Senior Jakub Trzasalski recorded a 61st-place finish in 26:36, followed by redshirt senior Cory Hampshire in 90th (26:55) and redshirt sophomore Brather Cline in 93rd (26:59) to round out the team's four top-100 finishers.
In the women's 6K gold race, redshirt senior Brooke Kott crossed the finish line with a new personal-best time of 22:01 to lead ECU. Rerdshirt senior Stefanie Fresenius was next to finish after clocking a mark of 22:16.
“Chase, Brooke, and Stef ran really great considering the heat and humidity," said Lee. "Overall the meet was a really mixed bag of results. It was so hot that it’s hard to judge how good all of the times were compared to past results.”
In a field comprised of nearly 500 collegiate and professional distance runners, the Pirates sent five runners into the women’s open 6K race. Senior Amanda Tomlin was the squad’s top finisher, completing the course in 24:05. Sophomore Rachel Rice crossed the finish line in 24:56, while newcomer Morgan Anderson was close behind with a time of 25:03.
The Pirates will open the championship portion of their schedule in two weeks, when they compete at pre-nationals on Saturday, Oct. 19 in Terre Haute, Ind.
