ECU Cross Country Completes Pre-Nationals

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Competing at the site of the 2013 NCAA Cross Country Championships, the East Carolina men’s and women’s cross country teams finished 17th and 29th, respectively, Saturday afternoon at Pre-Nationals at Indiana State University.
Redshirt junior Chase Miller led the men’s team in the8K white race with a 42nd-place finish in a time of 25:55.19 and was followed by senior Jakub Trzasalski in 77th place at 26:22.17. Redshirt senior Cory Hampshire was next to cross the finish line in 90th place with a time of 26:33.21.
Miller has now been the Pirates’ top finisher in each of the team’s last five races this season. ECU’s men’s runners totaled 427 points at the meet.
Ohio University won the event with 99 combined points, followed by UNC Greensboro in second with 119, Clemson in third with 139, Mississippi in fourth with 167 and Pittsburgh in fifth with 201.
On the women’s side, redshirt senior Stefanie Fresenius was ECU’s first runner to cross the finish line in the women’s 6K white race in 62nd place after clocking in at 22:15.14. Redshirt senior Brooke Kott was less than two seconds behind Fresenius in 67th place with a time of 22:17.10 to lead the Pirates.
The time was Fresnius’ best in a 6K event this season and marked the first time she was the squad’s top finisher in 2013.
Calfornia won the meet with 105 points, edging out Virginia Tech who took second place with 107 points. Xavier finished third with 184 points, followed by Illinois in fourth (184) and Albany in fifth (229).
East Carolina will open the championship portion of the schedule in two weeks when it travels to Denton, Texas on Nov. 2 for the 2013 Conference USA Cross Country Championships at the University of North Texas.
