GREENVILLE, N.C. – The ECU men’s and women’s cross country teams will travel to Wilmington, N.C., for their second meet of the season when they compete at the Seahawk Invitational on Friday, Sept. 6.
The men open the competition at 6 p.m., followed by the women at 6:30 p.m., with both teams covering a flat 5k course.
In addition to East Carolina, the field includes Barton, Campbell, Guilford, Meredith, Methodist, Peace, UNC Pembroke, Pfeiffer, Shaw, St. Andrews and host UNCW.
ECU swept last year’s competition, including the individual titles by Stacey Gonzales (18:17) and Antonio Palmer (15:42).
In last weekend’s season-opening meet – the Covered Bridge Invitational hosted by Appalachian State – the Pirates’ women’s team recorded a third-place showing after placing four runners among the top-20 finishers, while the men’s team placed fourth.
Brooke Kott was the top finisher for the Lady Pirates as she recorded a time of 19:05.01 for a 12th-place finish in the 5K. She was followed by senior Stefanie Fresenius (19:10.34), freshman Caitlyn Sheva (19:17.31), and senior Chelsea Hollingsworth (19:20.51), who placed 15th, 17th, and 19th, respectively.
On the men’s side, redshirt senior Cory Hampshire led ECU with a time of 26:10.39 for eighth place in the 8K. The redshirt senior from Shenandoah Junction, W.Va., was the only Pirate to finish in the top 10. Senior Chase Miller earned a 14th-place finish with a time of 26:25.33.
