GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina men’s and women’s cross country teams will host their annual Pirate Invitational this Friday, Sept. 27 at Lake Kristi. The men’s 5K event will start at 5:30 p.m., followed by the women’s 5K at 6 p.m.
Other teams competing include Shaw University, Saint Augustine’s University and North Carolina Central University.
The men's and women's programs have won the Pirate Invitational in each of the last four years, while redshirt senior Cory Hampshire is a two-time champion in the men’s race (2010 and 2011), and notched a third-place finish at the 2012 Pirate Invitational. The men’s team claimed each of the top eight spots at last year’s event, with its top seven finishers recording points to give the squad a perfect score (15) in its victory.
Senior Bjork Olsen won the women’s race in 2012, where the Pirates also took home each of the top eight spots and recorded a perfect team score with 15 points.
Last weekend, the ECU men’s team took third place at the Adidas Wolfpack Invitational in Cary, N.C., where junior Chase Miller was the Pirates’ top finisher in 10th place, completing the 5K course with a school-record time of 15:12.8. Redshirt senior Brooke Kott helped the women’s team to a fifth-place showing with her 20th-place finish in the 5K event with her best time of the season at 17:57.7.
