Lapp Named Spirit Of Service Recipient
Dec. 17, 2009
IRVING, Texas - Sophomore cross country runner Amanda Lapp has been named the East Carolina winner of the Conference USA Spirit of Service award, according to an announcement by the league office Wednesday afternoon. The award is designed to recognize the community service efforts of the league’s student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport. The Spirit of Service award will be presented three times throughout the season, with Wednesday’s honorees representing Conference USA’s fall sports: football, soccer, volleyball and cross country.
Lapp, a Raleigh, N.C., native, was selected as ECU’s fall recipient based on her achievements on and off the cross country course. She is a member of the National Honor Society of Collegiate Scholars and, a year ago, was named to the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll. A biology major, Lapp posts a 3.46 grade-point average.
During the fall semester, she totaled 49 hours of community service while working at the Humane Society of Eastern North Carolina, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Wake County, the Special Olympics and much more.
For the Pirate cross country team this fall, Lapp ran in all seven meets, coming in no lower than third on the squad. Her best time of the season in the 5K was at the Seahawk Invitational, where she clocked out with a personal-best 18:34.26. She had her highest finish of the year at the ECU Pirate Invitational, checking in second overall.
At the Conference USA Championship, Lapp placed 35th, a 25-spot improvement over her 2008 placement, with a time of 19:50.8. To close out the year at the NCAA Regionals, she set a career-best time in the 6K, finishing in 113th place with a time of 22:57.72, cutting nearly two minutes off her time from last season's regional and improving 90 places.
