IRVING, Texas - East Carolina senior cross country runner Antonio Palmer was recently announced by Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky as one of the 12 student-athletes to receive the 2012-13 C-USA Fall Spirit of Service Award. He was one of four cross country honorees on the list this fall.

The C-USA Spirit of Service Award is designated to recognize the community service efforts of the league’s student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport. The Spirit of Service Award is presented three times throughout the season. Today’s honorees represent C-USA’s fall sports: football, soccer, volleyball and cross country.

Palmer is a member of both ECU’s cross country and track & field teams. A health and fitness major, Palmer stays active in the community with a number of service projects. He has been involved with the Friends of Greenville Greenways, the Building Hope Community Life Center, The Salvation Army and the First Born Community Development Center Food Bank.

The Gaithersburg, Md. native has also worked on a number of ECU athletic initiatives, including Letterwinners Weekend and the Track & Field Invitational.

During the past cross country season, Palmer competed in six meets and won a pair of 5K events. He started his season with an individual victory at the Seahawk Invitational. He also earned the title at the ECU Pirate Invitational with a career and season-best time of 15:40.49. Palmer competed in a pair of 8K events for Pirates. He ran a 27:07.7 at NCAA Pre-Nationals and improved on that time by over 23 seconds (26:44.5) later in the campaign to place in the top-50 (44th) at the C-USA Cross Country Championships.
