GREENVILLE, N.C. - Jake Smith and Ryan Tousley each collected a career-high five RBI as ECU won in convincing fashion over Duke, 19-5, Tuesday afternoon at Clark-LeClair Stadium. With the win, the Pirates improve to 5-2 with the 14-run victory while Duke drops to 2-4 overall.
Smith finished the day 3-for-6, reaching base on all six plate appearances. In addition to Smith, Dale Mollenhauer and Adam Witter each finished the day with three hits while all three also scored three runs. Tousley and Jay Mattox each scored two runs while also collecting multiple hits with Tousley going 2-for-5 and Mattox hitting 2-for-3.
Scott Andrews earned the win in relief for ECU, allowing one run on four hits while striking out three in three innings of work. Starter Mike Flye lasted just two innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out five before giving way to Andrews. Michael Hill and Cody Leggett each made their first appearances of the season, with Hill allowing two runs in two innings of work and Leggett tossing a scoreless eighth. Rhodes came on to pitch a scoreless ninth, striking out a batter.
Duke starter Tony Bajoczky suffered his third loss of the season, giving up eight runs, seven earned, in 3 1/3 innings of work. Jim Perry, Russell Durfee and Daniel Palmer combined to finish the game for the Blue Devils. Four Duke hitters finished with multiple hits led by Brett Bartles, who finished 4-for-5 with a run scored.
ECU started the scoring early with a run in the first. Mollenhauer led off the inning with a double that landed on the warning track in center and scored two batters later from third on a Smith fielder's choice grounder to short.
Two singles and a fielder's choice loaded the bases for Duke in the second before a Flye wild pitch tied the game at one. The Blue Devils then took the lead with an Adam Murray RBI groundout to short, scoring Ron Causey from third.
The Pirates broke the game open with a four-run fourth. Mattox doubled to right center in the third and after Smith reached on a fielder's choice, Witter doubled off the wall in right, scoring Mattox from second. Tousley then brought home Smith with a sac fly to center before Batts hit the third double of the inning with a shot down the line in left, scoring Witter. A fielding error by Duke first baseman Jonathan Anderson off the bat of Adam Hodges allowed Batts to score, giving ECU a 5-2 lead after three.
Mollenhauer led off the fourth with single to left and two batters later Smith doubled deep to right, scoring Mollenhauer. Witter then hit his second double of the game to right, scoring Smith before Tousley hit his second homer of the season with a blast over the wall in right, pushing the Pirate lead to 9-2.
The Blue Devils got a run back in the fifth when Sherlock led off the inning with a solo home run to right.
Mollenhauer continued his big day at the plate in the fifth with an RBI single to left, scoring Drew Schieber from second. After a Mattox walk, Smith hit his second consecutive double, bringing home Mollenhauer and Mattox to put the Pirates up nine.
ECU's biggest inning came in the six when the Pirates plated six more runs to increase the lead to 18-3. The inning included four singles, one double, two walks and a sac fly.
Duke added two runs in the seventh and ECU scored another in the eighth to close the scoring.
East Carolina will host the Third Annual Keith LeClair Classic this weekend, Feb. 24-26. This year's field, in addition to ECU, includes in-state clubs N.C. State and UNC Wilmington in addition to Penn State, Virginia Tech and West Virginia. The first game of the classic will feature Virginia Tech and UNC Wilmington at 10 a.m. Friday morning with the Pirates' first game against Penn State starting at approximately 5 p.m. that afternoon.
