GREENVILLE, N.C. - Jake Smith's sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth scored Drew Schieber to break a 3-3 tie as East Carolina won the Friday finale of the Third Annual Keith LeClair Classic sponsored by Wachovia and Trade-Wilco, 4-3, at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

After Brandon Henderson grounded out to lead off the inning, the Pirates loaded the bases with the next three batters. Schieber walked before Dale Mollenhauer singled to center and Jay Mattox singled to right. Smith then sent a towering fly down the line in left and after the catch was made, leftfielder Lance Thompson's throw was unable to get Schieber at the plate.

With the win, the Pirates improve to 6-2 on the season while Penn State falls to 0-4.

Stephen Batts led ECU at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance, all singles back up the middle. Mattox and Henderson also finished with multiple hits with Mattox going 2-for-5 with a run scored and Henderson hitting 2-or-3 with a run. The Pirates' two RBI came on Smith's sac fly and a Schieber groundout in the second.

Carter Harrell earned the win for ECU tossing two scoreless innings in relief. Harrell allowed two hits and walked one, earning his first win since May 8, 2004. Hose earned the no decision in his third start of the season despite tying a career-high with nine strikeouts. The sophomore right-hander allowed three runs on six hits while walking just one.

PSU starter Alan Stidfole lasted eight innings before leaving with the score tied at 3-3. Stidfole gave up three runs, none of which were earned, on seven hits while striking out seven. Reliever Paul Hawkins suffered this loss, allowing the one run in the ninth on two hits while walking one.

Matt Cavagnaro, Scott Gummo and Cory Wine all finished 2-for-4 on the night to lead the Nittany Lions. Gummo, who hit his first homer of the season, finished with two RBI and a run scored. Lance Thompson and Matt Lewis also plated runs for PSU.

With Mattox on third and Adam Witter on first with two outs in the bottom of the first, a double steal scored Mattox as an attempt to throw Witter out at second was unsuccessful.

Batts led off the second with a single to center and after a sac bunt and a throwing error advanced him to third, Schieber brought him home on a groundout to third.

PSU got on the board in the top of the fourth when Gummo hit the solo homer to left, cutting the Pirate lead to 3-1.

Penn State took the lead in the sixth with two runs off Hose. Lewis doubled deep to center in the fifth to score Thompson from first, tying the game at three before Gummo singled to center, scoring Thompson for his second RBI of the game.

ECU tied the game up in the bottom of the seventh when Henderson scored from third on a throwing error by PSU shortstop Scott Gaffney on a Mattox grounder.

The Nittany Lions threatened in the top of the eighth, loading the bases with just one out before Gummo flew out to right and Harrison Eldridge gunned down runner Cavagnaro at home attempting to tag and score the go-ahead run.

N.C. State and Penn State will battle in the opener Saturday at 10 p.m. before the Pirates host UNC Wilmington at 1:30 p.m. Virginia Tech and West Virginia will play in Saturday's finale, scheduled for 5 p.m.
