GREENVILLE, N.C. -East Carolina shutout Stony Brook for the second consecutive day at Clark-LeClair Stadium, picking up a 4-0 win Saturday afternoon over the Seawolves. Dustin Sasser and Carter Harrell combined on the three-hit shutout while Jake Smith hit two homers and drove in all four Pirate runs.
Smith, who has tallied 21 RBI in the Pirates' last seven contests, hit a two-run shot in the first, a solo blast in the third and an RBI single in the fifth to provide all of ECU's run support. The senior catcher has collected at least four RBI in four of ECU's last seven games while hitting .500 (15-for-30) in that span. He also extended his hitting streak to nine games on Saturday.
With the win, East Carolina moves to 10-3 on the season while Stony Brook drops to 0-5.
Sasser tossed seven shutout innings, giving up just three hits and one walk while striking out two. Harrell came on and tossed the final two innings of scoreless ball for ECU, striking out two Seawolves.
For the second time this weekend, Andres Perez was the only Stony Brook hitter with multiple base knocks, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Isidro Fortuna picked up the only other hit on the day for SBU.
Smith's first homer of the day came in the first with a two-run shot to left, scoring Mattox who had reached base on a single up the middle.
Smith's second homer of the game, and fifth of the season, came in the third with a solo blast again to left.
The Pirates' plated their fourth run in the fifth when Smith singled to right-center, scoring Mattox for the second time in the ballgame.
East Carolina and Stony Brook will play the series finale Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
