March 4, 2011
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Senior Seth Maness was masterful in his Friday afternoon outing against Pepperdine tossing his first career complete game and tying a career-high with 11 strikeouts in East Carolina's 2-0 win over Pepperdine at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium. With the win the Pirates improve to 6-2 on the season, while the Waves fall to 4-5.
Maness (2-1) atoned for his last outing, which was against No. 10 Virginia, facing three over the minimum and at one point retired 18 hitters in a row from the third to the ninth when Chris Amezquita singled with two outs. In all he forced eight ground outs, seven fly outs, walked one and hit one in his third career complete game.
Aaron Gates (0-2) was tagged with the loss allowing two runs (both earned) on six hits with two strikeouts and six walks in seven innings of work. Michael Swanner pitched the eighth frame recording a strikeout and allowing a hit.
ECU jumped on the board in the second when Zach Wright, Tuesday's night's hero, scored on Mike Ussery's single through the right side, staking the Pirates to a 1-0 lead. Wright led off the frame with walk then took second on Chris Gosik's single to right before Ussery was able to take a 1-1 offering opposite field for his fifth RBI of the year.
In the fourth, Gosik stroked a first pitch fastball to left field for his first home run of the season and third of his career pushing the Pirates lead to 2-0. From that point on it was all Maness as he fanned nine over the next five frames including striking out the side in the seventh.
The Pirates and Waves will conclude the three-game non-conference series Saturday, March 5 when they play a doubleheader starting a 2 p.m. (ET) due to potential inclement weather moving into the area on Sunday.
