Houston Rallies To Sweep Series, 5-3 In 10 Innings

HOUSTON, Texas - Jacob Campbell's sac fly to left field scored Justin Montemayor helping No 28 Houston (21-4, 3-0) to a 5-4 extra inning win over East Carolina (11-13, 0-3) Sunday afternoon at Cougar Field in Conference USA action.
Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the 10th, Kyle Kirk led off the stanza with a single down the left field line, but was wiped out on a Caleb Barker fielder's choice. Pinch runner Chris Waylock took second on Montemayor's single down the left field line putting runners on first and second with one out. Kyle Survance singled through the right side scoring Waylock and knotting the game at four. Campbell took a 0-2 count from Drew Reynolds to left field scoring the game-winner in Montemayor.
Matt Hernandez (3-1) got the win in relief working a scoreless 10th with two walks. Starter Jake Lemoine was touched for three runs (two earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts. Ryan Vrugginnk and Tyler Ford combined for two scoreless innings and Chase Wellbrock allowed one run (earned) on two hits in one-third of an inning.
Reynolds (0-1) took the loss allowing three runs (all earned) on five hits in 2.1 innings. David Lucroy was solid in his start scattering four hits allowing one run (earned) with eight strikeouts and four walks. Andy Smithmyer gave up a run without recording an out and Jake Harris pitched one-third of an inning.
With the game tied at three in the top of the 10th, Dylan Brown belted a leadoff home run giving ECU a 4-3 lead before the Cougars roared back for the series sweep.
For the first time in the series the Pirates jumped out to an early lead scoring a pair of runs on four hits in the top of the first. With Jack Reinheimer standing on third and Brown on second, Ben Fultz singled to right with two outs scoring Reinheimer. Chase McDonald followed with another two-out base knock scoring Brown for a 2-0 lead.
ECU scored a run in the fifth to push its lead to three, 3-0. Garrett Brooks reached on an infield single to short, took second on Travis Watkins' sac bunt and third when Bryan Bass reached on an error by Frankie Ratcliff at short. Reinheimer's RBI fielder's choice to third was good enough to score Brooks.
Houston scored a pair of runs in the eighth inning to close the gap to one, 3-2. Josh Vidales singled home the first run on a base hit to second scoring Ashford Fulmer. Appling walked following Fulmer, who was hit by a pitch, and took second on a wild pitch. Appling scored on a failed pickoff by Harris and Vidales moved to third. With one out, Barker reached on a sac bunt fielder's choice back to Reynolds, who fired home to get Vidales at the plate for the second out. The final out came when Barker darted home on what looked to be a passed ball, but Watkins corralled the ball and fired to Reynolds covering home.
The Cougars knotted the game at three to force extra innings on Appling's single to right center that scored Kyle Survance, who walked to start the stanza. Ratcliff walked with one out before Appling's two-out single.
ECU will return to action on Tuesday, Mar. 26 when it plays host to William & Mary at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.(ET).
