Zach Wright belted two home runs

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -Zach Wright's second home run of the day, a three-run shot in the top of the ninth, gave East Carolina (20-7, 3-3 C-USA) a come from behind win in game three of the Conference USA series against UAB (16-11, 4-2 C-USA).
Trailing 5-4 with one out in the ninth, Wright lifted a 0-1 pitch to right field scoring Ben Fultz and Trent Whitehead in front of him. Fultz led off with a double to left center and Whitehead walked. Philip Clark scored the final run of the stanza on a Chris Gosik single to cap the scoring.
Seth Simmons (4-0) picked up the win in relief working 1.1 innings with two strikeouts, two walks and two hits, but did not allow a run in his 13th appearance of the season. Brad Mincey made his first start of the season working 3.2 innings where he allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits with two walks and a pair of strikeouts. Sophomore lefty Jake Harris made his 13th appearance of the season working a career-best 4.0 innings allowing a run (earned) on one hit with six punch outs.
Ryan Nance (1-1) suffered the loss allowing four runs on four hits in the ninth inning. Michael Busby allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits in five innings of work. The right-hander fanned four and walked two before passing the ball to Huddleston in the sixth. Huddleston went 3.0 innings of relief with a strikeout and two walks, while allowing one hit.
UAB took a 5-4 lead in the eighth inning on Nick Crawford's sac bunt that scored Coy Arrowood. Ivan De Jesus walked to start the frame then was lifted for Arrowood, who took second on a Ryan Nance sac bunt and third on a wild pitch setting up the would-be game winner.
ECU wasted little time getting on the board pushing across a pair of runs in the first inning taking a 2-0 lead. Fultz reached on an error, Jack Reinheimer followed with an infield single and Whitehead loaded the bases on a walk. Austin Homan drove in the first run on a fielder's choice scoring Fultz and John Wooten singled through the left side plating Reinheimer.
UAB tied the game at two in the bottom of the first. Keith DePew walked with one out and took third on Patrick Palmeiro's single. John Frost followed with an RBI single that scored DePew and Palmeiro scored on passed ball tying the game.
Wright smacked a solo home run to right center giving ECU a 3-2 lead in the third inning.
UAB used four hits and a Pirate error to score a pair of runs and take its first lead of the afternoon at 4-3. Harry Clark and De Jesus recorded back-to-back singles to left and Nance reached on a fielding error by Drew Reynolds to load the bases. Crawford followed by reaching on a fielder's choice where Reynolds threw home for the second out. DePew singled to left scoring a pair of runs to take the lead at 4-3.
Corey Thompson's ground out to second scored Wooten in the sixth to tie the game at four. Wooten doubled to lead off the frame and Chase McDonald singled to left center putting runners at the corners. After a UAB pitching change, a wild pitch moved McDonald to second and Reynolds strikeout, Thompson scorched a grounder to second pushing across the tying run.
On the afternoon the Pirates recorded 12 hits with Wright leading the way going 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBI. For Wright it was his second multi-HR game of the season and fourth of his career. Wooten also added two hits, while seven others collected a base knock.
ECU will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to in-state rival N.C. State before returning home Wednesday for a midweek tilt against Elon and a three-game series against Rice.
