BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Bryan Bass recorded a game-high three hits, scored a pair of runs and drove in another helping East Carolina (19-20, 5-6) to a 4-1 Conference USA series win over UAB (16-23, 3-8) Saturday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.
For the second-straight game the Pirates jumped out to an early lead scoring in the top of the first frame and never trailed. Bass, who has recorded a hit in 11 of his last 12 games, singled to left field to start the stanza and moved into scoring position on a Sam Kelley wild pitch. Jack Reinheimer pushed him over to third on a sac bunt and Drew Reynolds followed with an RBI single through the right side for a 1-0 lead.
David Lucroy (4-1) picked up the win after allowing one run (earned) on four hits with six punch outs in 6.1 innings. Brett Mabry notched his first save of the season tossing 2.2 scoreless innings of relief with three punch outs.
Kelly (3-4) took the loss surrendering a pair of runs (both earned) on four hits in 5.2 frames. Cory Eller allowed a run (earned) in an inning of work and Cameron Rose closed out the game giving up a run (unearned) on one hit in 2.1 innings.
ECU added to its lead in the sixth when Bass scored on a wild pitch for a 2-0 advantage. Bass was hit by a pitch to start the inning then moved to second on Reinheimer's second sac bunt of the contest. Reynolds followed with another ground out pushing Bass 90 feet away from home. After a UAB pitching change, Bass darted home on an Eller wild pitch.
Bass' RBI single in the seventh extended the Pirates lead to 3-0. Ben Fultz was hit by an Eller pitch to start the stanza and took second on Garrett Brooks sac bunt back to the pitcher. With two outs, Bass stroked his third base hit of the day with a one-hopper to left field easily plating Fultz from second.
UAB finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh cutting the lead to two, 3-1. With the bases loaded and one out, Chase Davis reached on a fielder's choice grounder to third where Zach Houchins corralled the ball stepping on third retiring Griffin Gum before trying to turn a double play with a throw to first. Tyler Mims scored on the play from third for UAB's lone run of the day.
A well executed squeeze play from Jay Cannon scored Reynolds from third extending ECU's lead to 4-1. Reynolds doubled to right center to start the inning then took third when Houchins reached on a throwing error by Rose on his bunt back to the mound. With one out, Reynolds took off for home while Cannon was squaring around to bunt. Cannon got the sac bunt down and Reynolds slid home giving the Pirates a three-run lead.
Bass and Reynolds tallied five of ECU's hits, while Cannon recorded the other base knock leading off the fifth inning. For UAB, Ryan Prinzing and Harry Clark each collected two hits each.
ECU will turn to right-hander Ryan Williams (5-2, 4.24 ERA) as it goes for its first series sweep of the season Sunday, Apr. 21 at 2 p.m. (ET). UAB will counter with righty James Naile (4-3, 4.37 ERA).
