HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Blake Brown's two-run double to left field in the seventh inning sparked a come from behind win as Southern Miss (27-22, 11-9) took game two of the three-game Conference USA series over No. 30 East Carolina (32-18-1, 13-9-1) Sunday morning at Pete Taylor Park. The game was suspended Saturday afternoon because of rain and was resumed at 10 a.m. (EST).
Brown put the Golden Eagles up 4-3 in the seventh taking a 1-1 offering from Drew Reynolds off the wall in left field that scored Kameron Brunty and Travis Creel.
When the game resumed, Reynolds sat on second base for ECU with one out and John Wooten at the plate. Wooten doubled to left center giving the Pirates a 3-2 lead.
Chase Horn (1-3) picked up the win despite working two-thirds of an inning in relief. Cody Livingston also worked two-thirds of an frame before Bradley Roney notched his 10th save of the season recording the final four outs where he allowed a hit, walk and struck out one. Starter Jake Drehoff was impressive Saturday tying his season high with eight strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings where he allowed two runs (both earned) on six hits with a walk before the game went into a rain delay.
Tanner Merritt (3-5) suffered the loss allowing a pair of runs on one hit in one-third of an inning. Merritt, who made his 24th appearance on the season, took the hill for the Pirates in the bottom of the seventh surrendering a hit and issuing a walk before being lifted for Reynolds. Freshman Jeff Hoffman, who made his seventh start of the season and first in C-USA action, allowed two runs (both earned) on three hits in six innings of work. The tall right-hander issued four free passes and struck out five before turning the game over to the ECU bullpen. Reynolds closed out the final 1 2/3 innings allowing one run on two hits.
Mason Robbins padded Southern Miss' lead in the eighth, 5-3, with a solo home run to right center, his third of the season.
Southern Miss jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Blake Brown started the frames when he was hit by a Jeff Hoffman pitch with one out. Connor Barron followed with a single to right center putting runners on the corner for Austin Roussel. After a passed ball scored Brown and moved Barron into scoring position, Roussel drew a walk to keep the inning going. Ashley Graeter singled to right field plating Barron for the second run of the game.
ECU responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, tying the game at two. John Wooten reached on an infield single to short and took third on Zach Wright's double down the left field line. Jack Reinheimer plated the Pirates first run of the series on a ground out to second and Chase McDonald singled through the left side scoring Wright.
Game three will start at 12 noon (EST) with Tyler Joyner taking the hill and trying to help the Pirates avoid a weekend road sweep.
