Pirates Drop Final Game Of Regular Season, 11-2

RICHMOND, Va. - VCU scored six runs in the first inning and cruised to a 11-2 win over East Carolina during the final game of the 2012 regular season at The Diamond on day two of the Terry Sisisky Classic. With the win the Rams claim the home-and-home series and improve to 32-23, while the Pirates fall to 34-20-1.
VCU jumped out early on the Pirates scoring six runs on two hits in the bottom of the first to take a 6-0 lead. With the bases loaded and one out, Taylor Perkins reached on a throwing error scoring Bill Cullen for the games first run. Vimael Machin followed with a sac fly to right field scoring Jordan Weymouth. Brent Mikinois was hit to load the bases and then consecutive walks by Kyle Sutherland and Paul Nice pushed the lead to 4-0. Cullen capped the scoring with a two-run double back up the middle.
Matt Lees improved to 4-2 on the season allowing one run (earned) on four hits before passing the ball to Brennan Huelse to start the seventh where he gave up one run on two hits. Starter Heath Dwyer tossed four scoreless frames with a pair of punch outs. Chris Shaklee and Michael Graham each added scoreless frames for the Rams.
Jharel Cotton (8-1) suffered his first loss of the season working just two-thirds of an inning where he allowed six runs (one earned) on one hit with three walks and two hit batters. Tyler Joyner was solid in his 4 1/3 frames allowing a pair of runs (one earned) on two hits with five strikeouts. Sophomore Drew Reynolds worked two innings allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits with four walks. Dario Santangelo, DeShorn Lake and Austin Chrismon
Tyler Buran staked the Rams to an 8-0 lead when he drilled his fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot that scored Joey Cujas ahead of him. Cujas reached on a fielding error at third base by Thompson.
The Pirates finally scratched across a run in the sixth on Chase McDonald's RBI single to left field. John Wooten doubled off the wall in right center with one out and Zach Wright followed with a single to right putting runners on the corners for the McDonald.
VCU added a run in the sixth and a pair in the seventh to take an 11-2 lead.
Wooten's sac fly to right field scored Bryan Bass to make the score 9-2 in the seventh. Bass singled up the middle, took second on Mike Ussery's single and moved to third on a double steal before trotting home on Wooten's 35th RBI of the season.
The Pirates will head off to Pearl, Miss. Monday morning for the 2012 Conference USA Championships and will learn later this evening what seed, opponent and dates of competition once all the games have concluded.
